The Imagination Station

theimaginationstationviking

One great childhood memory I have was listening to Adventures in Odyssey on the radio while in the car. Sometimes we would be so wrapped up in the story that my mom would keep driving around so we could hear the ending (yes, this was before CD’s and DVD’s). Now Paul McCusker and Marianne Herring  have taken Odyssey to a new generation of kids with The Imagination Station book series.

Voyage with the Vikings is the first book in the Imagination Station series geared toward kids ages 7 and up. Cousins Beth and Patrick are sent back in time to the Vikings era. There they met Erik the Red, Leif Erickson and others while on their quest to find a special sunstone in order to save Albert.  This book is a mixture of historical fiction and mystery with Christian values included.

Theimaginationstationarena

The second book in the series is Attack at the Arena. At the end of the first book, Beth and Patrick receive a second note telling them that in order to help Albert, the cousins needed to find a Roman monk’s silver cup. They hop into the Imagination Station to be transported back to ancient Rome and end up right in the middle of the Arena.  In this book the cousins meet Telemachus and the emperor Honorious, and witness one of the Roman games. Will they find the cup? And who is Albert who they are trying to save? Another wonderful mixture of history, mystery, and faith.

These historical fiction books are a fun addition to add to a history unit study. On The Imagination Station website, there are history facts, vocabulary word lists, family activities and more listed for each book.  One fun component of the books is solving the riddle at the end of the book. By solving, you get a secret code to add on the website. These books are a great fit for children just getting into chapter books and can make a good read-aloud for those a little younger.
